Don Giovanni cancelled

March 17, 2020

We regret that April's production of Don Giovanni has been cancelled.

This morning the Concordia Theatre issued the following statement:

Following the announcement made by the Prime Minister yesterday regarding social contact, including theatres, it is with a heavy heart that we have to inform that the Concordia Theatre has suspended performances with immediate effect.

Our volunteers and patrons are our most valuable asset and we must ensure the safety of our communities in these unprecedented times. We acknowledge the time, hard work and effort all our volunteers and societies put into productions at the Concordia and the inevitable disappointment for them and audiences alike.

We will be issuing guidelines in the next few days regarding refunds for patrons who have tickets for Sweeney Todd or Don Giovanni. In the meantime please bear with us whilst we put systems in place to do this.

For patrons who have tickets for Matt Ford or Night of a Thousand Stars (Pat Barker’s Academy of Dance), please keep your tickets secure for the time being as we will be discussing alternative dates with our external hirers.

Bookings are still being taken for performances beyond the 25th April 2020 with the hope that restrictions will be lifted to allow the remainder of our theatre programme to continue.

Please be assured that we are constantly monitoring developments and will keep you updated with progress. In the meantime, keep safe. We look forward to opening our doors and giving you a warm welcome again in the not too distant future.

The Marriage of Figaro: next production

May 13, 2018

We are excited to announce that our next production will be Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. While it has a serious message for our current #MeToo times, it is also arguably the funniest opera ever written.

Figaro and Susanna, his bride-to-be, battle to outwit the lascivious Count Almaviva who somehow still believes in the droit de seigneur – that as their lord and master he can rightfully claim sexual ownership of his female servants. Throw in a forlorn Countess, a testosterone-fuelled Cherubino, the scheming Marcellina and Bartolo (not to mention a drunken gardener and some of the greatest tunes ever written) and you have the perfect recipe for the perfect opera.

Rehearsals will start in the autumn with performances in April 2019 at the Hinckley Concordia Theatre.

Auditions will be at the end of September. More details to follow. Edited 28/07/2018.

Restaurant reveals its Cinderella Special Menu

March 09, 2018

Rossini Ristorante have just released details of their special fixed price Cinderella Opera Menu which they will be offering diners during our run of Rossini’s opera at the Concordia Theatre in April. A delicious two-course meal will cost just £16.90 and a three-course meal £19.90.

The top Hinckley restaurant will also continue to offer the regular á la carte menu, with Cinderella ticket-holders eligible for a 10% discount on pre-performance meals from 5pm on show nights: 13th, 17th, 19th & 21st April.

Cinderella set taking shape

February 27, 2018

With six and a half weeks to go before the first night of Cinderella, the set is gradually taking shape in the Concordia Theatre workshop. Stanley Opera has a reputation for creating its sets ‘in-house’, with designer Rick Scrine, pictured here and responsible for shows since 2004, working on construction with workshop manager Brian George and his team of skilled volunteers.

At this stage, ‘shape’ is the operative word as the complex settings for Don Magnifico’s kitchen courtyard and the royal palace involve constructing huge pieces of a three-dimensional jigsaw that will be decorated and then fitted together on stage five days before the first night on Friday 13th April. We're not superstitious, in spite of the date. Let’s trust that, unlike other jigsaws, no pieces will be found to be missing then.

A great offer from Rossini's

January 29, 2018

We’re delighted to report that top Hinckley restaurant Rossini will be supporting our production of Cinderella by offering 10% off pre-performance meals. For a great night out, ticket holders will be able to claim their discount on à la carte meals from 5pm on performance nights (13th, 17th, 19th & 21st April), giving plenty of time for a leisurely meal before strolling round to the theatre for the show at 7.30.

The restaurant, named after the opera’s composer, will also be creating ‘La Cenerentola’, a special fixed price two-course dinner devised by their chef in honour of the production. More details soon.

Charles Pole

January 09, 2018

It was with great sadness that we learned yesterday of the death of Charles Pole. Charles was a dynamic Stanley Opera member during the 1990s, both performing and directing for the company.

His roles included Mephistopheles in Gounod's Faust (pictured here in 1993)Colonel Frank in Strauss's Die Fledermaus (1994) and Dr Miracle in Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann (1996). He directed all three of these shows, plus Carmen in 1995, the Cavalleria Rusticana / Pagliacci double bill in 1997 and five concerts between 1992 and 1996.

January 07, 2018

The winner of the Christmas Competition is Kirsty Stoker from Hinckley.

We offered two free Cinderella tickets as the prize in our online competition. Kirsty can now choose which performance she would like to attend as our guest in April.
